The Big Bombastic Bill Passed the Senate...Now What?

Senate Republicans narrowly pass Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill”

In a dramatic turn late Tuesday, Senate Republicans pushed through President Donald Trump’s sweeping domestic package—the “One Big Beautiful Bill”—advancing tax cuts, defense and border spending, and substantial reductions to social programs. The bill passed by a razor-thin margin, 50‑50, with Vice President J.D. Vance casting the tie-breaking vote.

The Senate split evenly, requiring Vice President Vance to step in and secure the final vote. The legislation extends portions of Trump’s 2017 tax cuts, introduces targeted new tax breaks (including on tips and overtime), increases defense and border security funding, and reduces Medicaid, SNAP, and other social safety-net programs.

The Congressional Budget Office projects the bill will add roughly $3–4 trillion to the federal deficit over the next decade and increase the debt ceiling by about $5 trillion.

Three Republicans—Susan Collins (Maine), Thom Tillis (North Carolina), and Rand Paul (Kentucky)—joined all Senate Democrats in opposing the package, citing concerns over deficit expansion and cuts to health programs.

The modified Senate version now heads back to the House, where Speaker Mike Johnson faces a July 4 deadline to align the legislation with House priorities. This high-stakes bill marks Trump’s signature domestic policy push, and its fate could shape fiscal and welfare policy in the run-up to the next midterms.

With Vance’s tiebreaker, Senate Republicans cleared a major hurdle—sending Trump’s agenda into the House. But the bill’s deep cuts to Medicaid and nutrition programs have triggered sharp dissent even among GOP ranks, ensuring fierce debate as it moves forward.

While billionaires get more tax breaks and border walls get billions, everyday people are being told to survive with less. Less food. Less healthcare. Less dignity. The fact that it took a 50-50 deadlock and a vice presidential tiebreaker to pass this should be a warning siren.

This bill is another power grab, hoarded at the top and paid for by those already pushed to the edge. And if we don’t fight back now, the next vote won’t just cut funding — it’ll cut people out of democracy altogether.

What You Can Do

  • Call your House rep now. The bill still needs House approval. Demand they vote no on Trump’s "One Big Beautiful Bill." Especially if you live in a swing district, they are feeling the heat.

  • Share this story. Make sure people know what’s in the bill: tax breaks for the rich, cuts to healthcare and food for the rest of us.

  • Organize locally. This is bigger than DC. Start with your city budget. If your community is defunding schools while giving police more — speak up.

  • Register, re-register, and mobilize. Voter suppression is real. Confirm your status. Help five friends do the same.

  • Support groups on the front lines. Whether it's mutual aid, reproductive justice, or housing advocacy — redirect energy and money to people fighting for care over control.

Dream Big Act Bigger.
